GCSE Science | Magnetism

Field lines

  • always draw from north to south
  • like poles repel
  • unlike poles attract
  • equally spaced
  • draw 3-4 lines at least

Using a compass

  • place the compass close to one end of the magnet
  • observe where the needle points and leave a mark on either side of the needle
  • move the compass to the new mark
  • repeat steps
  • join the dots to show the magnetic field lines
  • choose a new starting point and repeat

Permanent magnets

  • have their own magnetic field
  • always magnetic

Induced magnets

  • only become magnetic
  • if they are around a permanent magnet

Magnetic core of The Earth

  • The compass aligns with the Earth’s natural magnetic field.
  • The compass needle is a magnetic North pole.
  • It points towards the geographical north pole
  • as this is a magnetic south pole.
