Field lines
- always draw from north to south
- like poles repel
- unlike poles attract
- equally spaced
- draw 3-4 lines at least

Using a compass
- place the compass close to one end of the magnet
- observe where the needle points and leave a mark on either side of the needle
- move the compass to the new mark
- repeat steps
- join the dots to show the magnetic field lines
- choose a new starting point and repeat

Permanent magnets
- have their own magnetic field
- always magnetic
Induced magnets
- only become magnetic
- if they are around a permanent magnet
Magnetic core of The Earth
- The compass aligns with the Earth’s natural magnetic field.
- The compass needle is a magnetic North pole.
- It points towards the geographical north pole
- as this is a magnetic south pole.
